Thanks for all the responses!

I have a few different tools already, the most expensive was nearly $200 when I got it but then I was working so no big deal. I keep one caliper by my computer the rest reside in the garage safe in a tool box.

I was thinking that one of these that do all three versions might be handy. I have a 20% coupon for HF so I can see one of those coming home with me and then see how I like it. I do want at least .001 resolution, wood working or not I want to measure things like drill bits and the like and know what I have, is that a quarter inch or a letter "F" sort of thing.

This is my more modern and user friendly tools. The red box is my expensive Starrett and it does imperial and metric but not fraction.

Might be going out tomorrow so if I can stop at HF I might have a report back on what I find and if I like it well enough to buy it.

Hi Ed! That's quite a collection
You have frequently mentioned your tool budget - now I know why.

You might now get listed as one of the best coustomers on the tool maker's favorite list. Or at least get "Honorable Mention" ;)

Cheeeeez I feel like a piker. I have one caliper. A plastic one from General but labeled as Sears I think. Rarely use them.

But those where the Military grade/spec batteries at $100 a piece!!! ;)
Tee Hee Hee. No they weren't. they were off the shelf watch batteries. I replaced lots of them. It was the high end Starrette electronics. :)

Stopped at HF today and got my caliper, $19.99 minus 20% or $15.99 + tax. It looks like just about the perfect match of specs and price for what I was looking for.

I have a special reference 1" test piece designed to check accuracy so I will give it a go later today and see how it does.

They (HF) also had a coupon for a free 7 function digital multi-meter, so now I have one of those. The wife found a couple of things she wanted but I still got out of there for about $22.

Happy so far.
