I'm not following you guys at all.
The serial number is said to be SS7629.
Yes, it is possible that a number (or 2) got dropped somewhere but it is also possible that the serial number does not follow the Shopsmith convention of the day (which was a four digit serial number).
Does any member of the forum have a machine whose serial number is alpha numeric?????

Two quick things.
1) we have seen SSXXXX numbers here before
2) note the Tipp City on the plate and shopsmith inc
Conclusion Sometime between 1972 and 1978.

The nameplate wood only tell ya the serial number, which you can use to tell when it was built. The model type depends on the table size.

Yes.
So can we assume from that is is an early Magna America number? Nothing on the SS site shows that.

Notice what followed the word 'Mark' to the left of the SN? That ain't no "V". IIUC the SS distinguishes the initial SS Inc. production from their predecessors.
Yes I think early SS Inc. production close to 1972.
Seems some folks are getting their knowledge base expanded!
Now that did not hurt too much did it?

What I miss is the bottom of the vent plate. I saw both those details the first time. All this babbling about the SN. A reveal of the bottom of the vent plate would likely have avoided all that. I see no reason to question the posters ability to read the 'SS' sn. What I would like to see is the Mark "5" at the bottom left.
I am also sure it reveals the motor size without requiring a look inside.

@JPG>Wonder what the bottom of the vent plate looks like!

My thoughts too, but I was waiting for Dusty to ask
