I was able to buy more than 12 Mark V mount planers that had been damaged when being shipped starting 13 years ago. I was able to rebuild 5 of the planers and sell them on Ebay. I shipped them using a well built wooden shipping box with the planer bolted to a 3/4" plywood bottom without any damage. I have partial remains of at least 5 of the Mark V mount planers along with a Mark V mount planer that I only recently found in my storage shed. The controller and feed motor does operate. There are no large frame pieces or tables as they were damaged and scrapped.

So, I am looking for someone who wants to get into the Shopsmith planer repair business. I have drawers of smaller parts, broken chains, cutter heads, table mounting posts that I will never be able to use as I am no longer doing any customer work. I am not asking a lot for all this stuff. Local pickup is preferred and much cheaper. Please contact me at bill.mayo@verizon.net if interested.

There is currently a free standing planer for sale near Longmont CO for $450. I don't know if it's a PRO or not. (It's not mine). Are these things really worth that kind of money, and if so why are they so much better than any other brand of used planer? For example, a Bosch or DeWalt?

They are very nice from what I have experienced. My grandfather had a DeWalt 12" planer and it does the trick (its kinda nice that the BLADES lower onto the wood so you can extend the planer table via rollers). The shop smith has a solid table so you know its flat and its of decent length so it minimizes snipe (but the tables goes up and down so you can't get a stable setup with an extended feed table and output table)

The shopsmith model also has the feed rate separate from the cutting rate. No "lunchbox" style model has that feature I believe.

Overall, both will do the trick, but for roughly the same amount of cash, I would go Shopsmith, more features for roughly the same price.

The more expensive, DeWalt, the 13" has 2 speed feed, but not variable like the SS.

For what it's worth.. i love my Shopsmith Power Pro Planner. THe cast iron table is nice.. not like the flimsy tables on other brands.
