I understand that a punch shaft can be inserted through a hole of a certain size to mark the exact spot to drill another hole, but where and why is this tool used.

Please explain to this old guy!
Just ran into this video, and it shows a couple of "off book" :) uses for transfer punches .

Another off book use for transfer punches.
Today I needed to turn a twig/weed pot (only my third) on short notice (less than two hours) for a birthday present for a friend.

When I did the first two I used a hand chisel to pare off the nub on the bottom and then hand sanded that bit. :( There had to be a better way.
So for this one I found a transfer punch that just fit the hole in the top, snug fit. Chucked the transfer punch in the drill chuck and instant jam chuck.

Worked like a charm. :D Turned off the nub, sanded and finished the bottom in no time.
Branch (apple wood, cut last year) to finished pot in 1 1/2 hours. Recipient was very pleased.

I picked up a set on your recommendation from Harbor Freight, used them yesterday for a transfer. Nice taste is a lathe ;)

Great thinking, Ron! :D The punch beats the dickens out of using a chuck. A chuck would leave marks.

I like the mini vase! I have some cut up apple wood branch but I didn't leave any longer pieces.... darn.

So is it hollowed or just a hole?

If it is hollowed I'm not sure how it stays stable, so looking forward to more information.

So is it hollowed or just a hole? Just a hole, I have been doing 3/8" about 3" deep. I think somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 should work.

If it is hollowed I'm not sure how it stays stable, so looking forward to more information. The first one has developed a small crack in the neck.

I'll start a new thread on these in Beginning Woodworking.
