I put a spare set of Castors on mine fom an old MkV. Had to make brackets though as the fit was not perfect.

The stand takes standard MK V casters. Just watch eBay and get a set there. They do require spacers. The legs on the Pro Planer stand are 17" apart and the MK V is 16". Dimensions are approximate. :) If you buy the castor set from the MS for the Pro Planer it comes with a set of spacers. Strips of 1/2" Baltic Birch ply will work just fine.

Thanks for the reply. I have fixed the problem with the creep. I put too much graphite powder on the jack screws and made them too slippery. All is good now, just have to design and build something too be able to move this heavy thing around.

I don't understand how "too much lube" would cause the problem. As I said in my other post SS recognizes the problem but too much lube is not one of their fixes. Anyhow,I am glad the problem is fixed. :)

I didn't think that graphite powder on the jack screws would cause my problem but it did. I did give them a liberal dose of the stuff. I am living on a fixed income so the SS casters aren't an option. I did see a set made of wood on you tube that I think I will use as the unit won't be moved around a lot and I have all the material to build them.

Years ago, I got to play with some mechanisms that an OSU mechanical engineering professor had collected for show-and tell with his students. One of them was a simple machine screw and nut, standard thread, maybe 1/2-13. But instead of steel on steel threads, both the screw and nut had been teflon coated. Well let me tell you, all you had to do was point the bolt either up or down, and gravity alone would happily spin the nut for you.

Whether a thread is self-locking depends on both the pitch and the coefficient of friction. And in the case of the planer, the vibrations from the cutters impacting the wood will help overcome friction.

So I guess that was a demonstration of Teflon in the day.

All of that is fine. Has anyone searched the forum to see if this is a big problem? I don't believe that planer creep has anything to do with over lubricating. In fact I have never heard of it before. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Just out of interest as I don't own one and doubt I will.... do they have instructions for lubrication of the parts in question?

My thoughts would be that the design would be such that so long as there is no locking method then the thread/column design would be robust enough to stay in place unless one turns the crank and the something as simple as adding some lubrication should play no part in having it stay in place.

My non shopsmith planer is the same way, you turn the crank and it stays where you left it. Multi column planers I've worked with all seem to be that way. An older designed commercial planner I seem to remember having a lock but it was a big beast anyway.

My non shopsmith version says to use grease btw, something I should check on as I haven't ever done anything to it.... and I've had it since about 1990 but use it very little, some years not at all.
