The simplest explanation usually has the highest likelihood of being correct. I'm guessing the set screw must not have been seated on the flat and/or perhaps just not seated tightly enough at all. Have you re-mounted it with the set screw seated firmly on the flat and carefully tried running it up to speed to see if it continues to walk?

I called the home office... :D

The current set screws have brass tips. I ordered several to have extras on hand, along with dust collector bags.

I think I'm set.

Thank you all!

Thank you for that update and confirmation of the brass tipped set screws.

I can't help but wonder why, after all these many years, Shopsmith would change to brass tips. This is one of those occasions where I wish that Shopsmith put out some sort of bulletin (periodic or as required) to notify the users of changes. In some cases, I am certain that they are missing an opportunity for sales.

I couldn't agree with you more Dusty.

However, what was the question that Albertt asked the MS? Did he ask about both the 5/8 and 1 1/4 arbors or only the 5/8 arbor? As Ed and I said our 5/8 arbors are brass. I believe Ed does not know for sure about the 1 1/4 but mine are definitely not brass on the 1 1/4. They were all bought in the mid 90's. Please correct me if I am wrong but didn't the 5/8 saw blade arbor come out somewhere in the 90's? So is this brass set screw the result of the, at the some point new 5/8 arbor, that some engineer decided was needed for that arbor. If the MS also changed the 1 1/4 arbor to brass why have they not (or have they?) changed ALL arbor set screws to brass (sanding disk, moulder, router, dado, universal etc)?

So I will ask again. Has anyone bought a 1 1/4? saw arbor in the last few years and does it have a brass tip set screw? How about all the other arbors?

I totally agree with you, Why after all these years?

Anyone who has purchased a new Mark 7 should have a new 1-1/4" arbor included with it. Dick? Anyone?

The arbor that accompanied my 2005 Mark V 520 (purchased used) does not have a brass-tipped set screw.

I checked all of my arbors, two 5/8" and several 1 1/4", all for the 510. Only the two 5/8" arbors have brass tipped set screws. At least one of the 5/8" arbors is over 20 years old.

I just went out and check the Mark 7's 1 1/4 arbor of 2014 production, it is NOT brass tipped. So I also check an arbor I bought last year (2015) and it is NOT brass tipped either.

I have always been told that the setscrews that tighten on to the quill are NOT to be cupped set screws. The cupped type displace metal and causes burrs on the quill. Use ball end or flat point set screws. If you got the machine used and the blade arbor was rusted then there may be too much clearance and thus a loose fit. Removing rust removes material and cause a loose fit between the set screw and the threaded hole in the arbor. A small amount of RTV sealant on the threads will tighten things up.
