Broken band saw blade

I used the wrong word. Yes, backup bearings*.

Had a 3/8" blade cutting through 2 pieces of mahogany for a total thickness of about 1.5". The tension was about 1-1.5 full turns past the 1/8" mark as I've seen countless times many suggesting to keep a slightly tighter blade tension than suggested by the Shopsmith Bandsaw guide. I was performing a really straight cut at the time. The guide was placed approx 1/4" above the stock. It got a little tough to move the wood forward for a second, and it broke. Loud pop, quite startling.

I'm sure there's always something I can do to be safer. But is a broken bandsaw blade something that's expected on a rare occasion? Or should it plainly NEVER happen?

I dont know how old your SS BS is, get the upgrade kit from the MS with the cool blocks, and better bearings, I think it is around $30+ shipping, makes a huge difference! I did it on 1 and an other kit sitting on the work bench to take home in 2 weeks for the SS stand alone BS.

I don't understand... Why? My blocks and bearings are fine. Bearings are brand new dual bearing setup, and I don't see the blocks causing any issues. There's plenty there, they're smooth and flat, and I feel absolutely no heat on the blade.
