I have had a couple significant injuries due to kick backs (actually due to the poor judgement that led to kick backs). I have not had one in a long while now. Maybe I finally have learned.

Mine, by the way, were not the result of alignment problems like so many will claim. Mine were all preventable had I been practicing good judgement.
I think kick backs are more an operator error than alignment as you say. Back in the 60's I was cutting a slot in a bed post for a customer at the Berlin Lumber Co. The customer was in the shop. It was a blind cut, set the stock down on the saw blade and stopped at the other end. Well, I didn't set the stock down on the blade at exactly the start of the cut. DUM,DUM,DUM I pulled back to get it correct. Bang, I cut the middle finger off almost and screwed up my index finger and my ring finger. The customer took me to the hospital 15 miles away and had to stop for gas on the way. A long healing process with the middle finger but all works just fine but a little crooked.

As Dusty said it was my fault. It was not an issue of alignment. Then I don't remember alignment being an issue. I guess it was assumed or ignored. If anyone has had more than one kick back then you should look seriously at you procedures.

Yup. Stop and think it thru. The machine simply eats what is pushed through, sometimes spits it back. I should have used the Micro Jig that was sitting next to the saw.

Well it some times takes a little pain to get our attention, and I expect you are now experiencing some pain. So long as you learn from it, that the sort of thing that one doesn't want to experience again.

OK now the link is for the Micro Jig SteelPro Splitter - for Thin Kerf Blades. And yes I have that same one and the one for regular blades. They are not interchangeable. Some where here I have some pictures but I don't recall where. You have to follow the instructions carefully and unless things have changed since I got mine it comes out just fine. The jig is a big help and I don't think you could do it with out that.

They do make a plastic version but the steel is the way to go. They are also designed to break and stay in the kerf if the wood closes up to tightly but you can read all about that and watch the video at Micro Jig web site.

While you are at it they are also the people who make the Grr-Ripper which is also great to use and if you've got the money make sure to get two of them. I have a post on them here some where as well.
