Re the small nut, sorry I can't see what is inside without dropping the motor but it is close to the hole where the power cord exits the headstock. I suspect it is there to fasten the power cord on the inside (strain relief). On the later headstock there is no hole and the power cord exits from the bottom.

Re the nut in the recess, it is for the quill lock. This earlier headstock casting uses the locks with two wedges, the later castings were changed to use the single wedge locks.

Kinda thought that on the HS wedge all of mine are single. Strain relief dont no, all of mine again had a knot from the switch to the motor in the motor plate, or was it in the cord to the switch, I forgot. I changed cords and lines to the switch and used wire ties.
