I agree. The Pop sounds like a filter capacitor blew. Now that revs up a bunch of thoughts on other failure issues and error codes we have been reading about.
If a filter capacitor is failing, it ceases to filter the AC 60Hz ripple that logically would be present on the logic side of 12VDC or 5VDC whatever theirs is that's driving the logic circuits, and processor. Sensors don't sense or report correctly and host of other logic level errors can present.
Any number of maladies could present a variety of symptoms with bad power.
I have seen more than a few bad batches of filter capacitors from a manufacturer make it through QC then fail down line in the computer industry through the years after being assembled as a component within a power supply.

It has smaller rpm range(700 - 5200).
It only runs one direction.
You will lose under table routing due to single direction(at least with a 'normal' setup).
Yes it operates differently, but you will be able to adjust(a human trait).

Like JPG said. 700 to 5200 RPM and no reverse.
I'm really sorry about your problem!! One of those things that shouldn't happen.
I have a couple experiences to Pass along here-
1) They would only send me a mark V headstock as a replacement, but did so quickly.
2) Shipping it is a real pain, but the warranty starts all over again when they put in new guts. At least they pay the shipping.

Doug Reed, bless his heart, was instrumental in my purchase of the Mark 7 through one of his webinars and now he, I believe, has convinced the MS to just send me a new power unit and I will fix the PP headstock myself (which is what I would prefer). So, I should know tomorrow, and I will let everyone know.
It seems Shopsmith is willing to work with the owners. I am still concerned about reliability, and will be until the PP proves itself.

So if they are willing to ship just a power supply that is a good thing unless of course it isn't the problem. I would think that it might be good time to open it up and have a good look round.
One thing I didn't like is the sheet metal screws being so close to the cables. I added a bit of protection to make sure the screw and cables don't get together...... so if you have the opportunity check to see if any thing else could have happen to the cabling, the connectors and I'd even check the wiring and switch, the main switch to make sure all of that looks and operates normal.
Did you get the upgrade kit or the whole new headstock?
If you have never opened it up or did the upgrade I'd get started now by reading up on the what all has to happen and the few things you might need to have on hand to do the swap. The motor is heavy and knowing how to handle it is going to be an issue. Like wise the other fun stuff that will be required to access the power supply. To be honest I don't know what the manual looks like for the non-upgrade versions, do they have all the instructions needed? If not then make sure that shopsmith is planning on sending them along.
I think it would be nice to have it all apart and waiting the new power supply rather then waiting then taking it apart...........
