I have all of the Shopsmith blades. Carbide rip, crosscut, and combination. Steel combination, crosscut, hollow ground planer, and plywood. I use them all at different times. Nothing beats using a sharp steel hollow ground planer blade for miters. Also, nothing beats a sharp steel plywood blade with zero clearance insert for getting splinter free plywood crosscuts. I find all the blades useful and I am glad I have them all. Also, I get just as clean of a cut using a sharp Shopsmith steel crosscut blade as I do using the Shopsmith carbide crosscut blade. Steel blades sharpened properly actually are sharper than carbide blades. However, carbide blades hold their sharpness longer than steel ones.
