They probably would if they had been invented there ....

Here's a related question, asked by my 7th-grade science teacher.
Does the Earth rotate clockwise, or counterclockwise?
The teacher didn't much like my answer, because it wasn't "textbook".

Clockwise viewed from the south pole. Counter clockwise viewed from the north pole.
To the right viewed from the equator.

I asked "Viewed from which pole?" He said it didn't matter. I attempted to demonstrate that it did, by rotating a pencil that represented the Earth. He accused me of reversing rotational direction during viewpoint change. It took me about 5 minutes to show him the light.
The textbook said "counterclockwise", period.

If clocks ran counter-clockwise, they wouldn't be clocks. They would be counter-clocks.
