Some folks probably remember the SoS "Something on a Shingle" which was supposed to be creamed beef on toast they had so many times while serving, and unless they liked it, probably wouldn't consider biscuits and gravy at first glance. Some times it was beef, and sometimes it was something else available.

I recall years ago a fellow who had never had really quality corn-on-the-cob as based on where he grew up, it was fed to the livestock.

There are a lot of southern foods that are amazing, equally, there are some incredible things in the north as well. Tony Luke’s Philly Cheesesteak comes to mind, but hey, it is in South Philadelphia after all. I wish I had the time to try all the best Cheesesteaks in Philadelphia

... but I digress.

I love freshly cooked biscuits and sausage gravy for the record, but I was born in Texas, so you might find some fresh jalapeno added on mine.

Absolutely, SOS at the chow hall. Put it on toast or hash browns or biscuits. When I enlisted in 1972 I believe it was made with dried chipped beef. Later they switched to sausage or just plain hamburger. I am not sure which. It was still great even after the switch.

Its funny, winter time, an egg, 1 sausage, or 1 piece bacon and 1 piece of toast and juice. 4-5 times a week. In the summer, it is fresh fruit and toast, the egg thing not much taste for and just maybe once a week.
Coffee always b4 to get wound up.

Hi All

Well, I am going to very gingerly test these waters. I was not here when these forums were set up, but to me , when I saw Community, I immediately thought that this was a forum for interchanges between members -- especially since all the other forums had descriptions but Community did not. I did not assume it was a "Flame Pit" (they have their place but not in a Community forum), but rather that it was for inter-action between members on what ever topic they wished that was non-woodworking or did not quite fit any of the other forums.

I for one enjoy reading the back and forth chit-chat, most of the time, and when I don't, I just ignore that topic and move on to a different one.

I feel that the Community forum has given me the opportunity to get to know you more than just as a woodworker and I like that.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I've had to alter my diet so while I'd love to have somethings I know it is not good for me so for the most part I don't indulge.

This morning while you were having that wonderful meal I was having a decaf coffee, 3 dates, Irish steel cut oats with blueberries(wild type). Yesterday I had decaf, 3 dates, a boil egg and blueberry english muffin.....

So enjoy it while you can.

Ed, you do have to indulge a bit to be happy!! In moderation of course. Ya I know it will be a mom story. She almost died last August from an Urinary Track Infection, UTI, that went systemic to her lungs. Bottom line, strong and wild as a wild horse, cant think what they call them, we got her home after rehap in Sept, and in Hospice. point is, mom has eaten healthy all here life, more fruit and veggies then protein at most meals, actually I have to get on her to eat more of it and I manage her diet with it. Anyway, at 95 she was on Libitor, or one of those, the Hospice Dr. said when going over her med list, Mary, at 95 and in your good shape, and diet, get rid of it, and save some $, that is not what is going to kill you, it will be a UTI that we cant get rid of with antibiotics.
