That certainly explains your '1/2"' question. You were ripping, not cross cutting. As I will divulge later a push stick was a contributing detail.

Never had kickback with push stick, when using push stick I tend to be extra careful.
I have had kickback with direct hand control. Every kickback that I have ever experienced came when I expected it the least. Once was ripping a 16x50 inch board. I still do not know what exactly happened but the solid oak board got up on top of the blade. Flying pass me by inches and traveling about 15 ft and sticking into dry wall. Board has a crescent moon shape cut across the face of it about 6 inches in from the end spanning almost all of the 16 inch width
