Thanks for all the kind comments!

It is definitely addicting. Also a bit daunting, especially the first time around. I was fortunate to notice a weak joint while seating it on the chuck before hollowing. Re-glued it and took some additional precautions, and it (and I) survived.

To Paul's question: the woods are maple and padauk. That combination made sanding a pain, as the fine dust from the padauk streaked the maple. I was largely able to address that by going over the maple portions by hand before moving to the next grit. But I think I'll stick with a single wood type for my next turning project.

As for this one, it's on its way to my mother as a belated Christmas gift.

Very Nice. One of the gifts I gave to my Mother on Christmas day was a Black Cherry bowl. She loves it as I'm sure your Mother is going to love and Cherish your gift!!!

Again, Nice job!

Really nice job for a first time and combining woods.

Curious as to the gouges you used.

How 'bout Sunday?

Boco, all my good stuff is
at my Brother's home. That
would be Sterling, or S1, as I'm
referring to him as.

To tell the "Rest of the Story,
as the Late Great Paul Harvey
would say;

Sterling, being the oldest, is S1.
Me being the next male child,
with a name beginning with "S,"
am S2. My younger brother, Stewart,
would be S3. Yes, there is a girl
between me and Stewart. Her
name does not start (Lisa) with an
"S". None of our other brothers can
claim the "S" either, Lisa is the only
girl.

Oh, S3 used to have a Model 10, that
S1 currently has. I've got 3 Model 10s,
one as a bike maintenance stand.

steve, or S2

Paul, I'm quoting here, but
"Maple and padauk."

I think Paduak is the red one here.

Oh, don't think it is an "ice bowl."
But it IS a "Nice Bowl." :D

Thanks, Steve. The bulk of the work was done with carbide tools from Eddie Castelin, with a radius square or round cutter as the situation dictated.

Did you take any pictures of the glue-up before you started turning?

Not of that one, but here is a second blank I haven't turned yet. This one has walnut as the secondary wood rather than padauk.

Looks good. I like the walnut color. I'm assuming you glued the boards up in a square, and then did the initial round cut on a bandsaw?
