Lesser of the evils?

Depends upon one's definition of evil. ;)
By just about any measure, the electoral college chose the greater evil. I take solace in the fact that the majority of voters agree with me.

The founders were much wiser than we give then credit for.

The concern they had 'then' was far less a 'threat' than today.

I for one do not wish to have NYC, LA, Chicago, Boston, Phoenix . . . do my voting for me.

They have a voice. The EC subdues their shouting.

I got to get my head around the Electoral System, I guess they all cant be from one Party type, or it would be biased and the populous vote would not be totally represented in there State. I dont know how they are selected at this time totally.

No, instead you're voting for them, since your vote is worth more than theirs. The electoral college was also supposed to act as a deliberative party, but that went away quickly. It seems to me we lost the best part of the electoral college and kept the worst part. And I don't think we've ever had such a big disconnect between the popular vote and the electoral vote.

My only comment to this thread (I hope). President Eisenhower, by executive order in the summer of 1959, made both Alaska and Hawaii states and part of the United States. Before that, they were both territories like Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and others of today. I went into 7th grade that fall and remembered the discussion in class and waited for the new flag with 50 stars to appear outside the classroom. When it came, we marched smartly outside and stood with our hands over our chests as the new flag was hoisted in place. That's all the history lesson from me.

IMHO, the real problem is with the primary process, not the electoral college. It seems that in recent years, the lunatic fringes of both parties dominate their respective primaries, and polarize the whole process. Leaving card-carrying moderates/centrists like me (and most other Americans, I strongly suspect), with the dismal civic duty of voting for the least-unpalatable candidate in the general election.

If Ronald Reagan ran for office today, I have no doubt that the far right would paint him as an unreformed Democrat in an elephant costume. If not an outright communist. And if FDR were running, the far left might excoriate him as a slacker on "civil rights". All of this hot air and hypocrisy would resonate around the talk shows and blogosphere, and neither of those great leaders would even win their respective primaries. They had undoubtedly been witnessed working compromises with their political adversaries (in the interest of the greater good ... a.k.a. demonstrating leadership). They were just too moderate. :(
