Thanks so much for the ideas folks.

Keeping it as a drill press only was interesting -- until I bought a used bench-top press a couple of months ago. That wall mounted beast is impressive!

My shop is so small, about 12' square, that with the Jet table saw, router table, workbench, and now drill press I was going to put on a rolling cart the right height for an out-feed table when I lift the press off, I don't have much room to spare. But y'all are really convincing on keeping the old beast!

You know, I don't even know what you mean by speed changer? You mean the movable belt system? Isn't that standard?

thanks,
Jab

The speed changer was an optional accessory. It provided infinitely variable speed adjustment in two ranges. Low range is 425-1600 RPM's and high range is 1850-6899 RPM's. They are very desirable and somewhat scarce. The average price on eBay is around $150.

I cant find it John, but I thought in LS range, the high speed was in the 1400 rpm range. I have it some where but cant find it tonight.

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them. :)

Easy enough to deduce what happened. It is only one key off. ;)

Yes and not CAREFULLY proofreading a simple post. 99-00 The last job I had as a civilian with the Air Force was rewriting aircraft generator technical orders. Proof reading what I wrote was obviously a big part of that. I guess I have lost my touch or unconsciously don't read as critically as I used to.

I gotta ask - why 'rewrite' technical orders?

Oh and what is a technical order?

Oh and what is a technical order?
Basically a technical order is a repair manual or a servicing procedure or any other maintenance procedure. Think loading bombs on an aircraft or fueling an aircraft after flight. It tells you how to do your job or how to inspect something and what defects you are looking for. How to repair those defects and how to test the end product or how to do a particular job in what ever maintenance field you are in. You don't just go down to ACE hardware and buy a 1/4-20 nut. All authorized parts are listed in the IPB Tech Order for the item. Those are the ONLY parts you are allowed to use. The procedure/repair/overhaul Tech Order also lists consumable items you are allowed to use. Again, they are the only ones authorized to to use. Everything is spelled out.

AF Tech Orders are all signed by the Secretary of the Air Force and constitute a lawful military order. They must be followed.

Why rewrite?

Materials change like cleaning solvents that are now banned so the consumables list must be changed, parts suppliers change so part numbers change in the IPB, procedures change for any number of reasons. All of that must be incorporated in the current T.O.. While the T.O. is being rewritten the cognizant engineer can issue a supplement to the T.O. to use the new procedures or what ever until a new T.O is published.

The Army has Field Manuals and the Navy has NAVAIR manuals that are the same thing.

When Lockheed-Martin started to turn over the F-22 generator overhaul to the Air Force I was the one who did it. I worked with the OEM Hamilton Sundstrand and rewrote and proofed their repair manual on the bench here at Hill AFB. We had Sunstrand cognizant engineers here along with Sunstrand technical writers and all the prints. I disassembled and reassembled the generator in real time following Sunstrand's manual and made correction in real time as we went. That Sundstrand manual is now an AF T.O. that I continued to use and make changes to until I retired.

BTW, I trained the four guys that are repairing F-22 generators now. They are the only four in the AF and I saw 3 of them yesterday.

Sorry JPG, that is probably more than you wanted to know (not really?) I just couldn't help my self.
