When the motor starts ,,,the start side of the capacitor provides a extra kick reducing amp draw,,,,it helps to get it started and up to speed faster ,,,,,after the motor reaches its rpm the amp draw drops ,, this drop in amps is what disengages the switch,,,,,, ,,,, line current and the run side of the capacitor supply current to the motor ,, , if you put a load on a motor once running,,,,, the run side of the capacitor provides a little extra kick again to reduce amp draw,,,,, that helps prevent over heating the brushes .
If you look at the capacitor it will have a,,{s },,a ,,{r} ,,,,,and a {c } on it ,, s=start,,, r=run and ,,,c=common

As far as being reversible ,, that would be identified on the motor tag.

When we refer here to shopsmith motors as being 'reversible', we are not referring to whether the motor was built reversible, but rather if it can be modified to be so.
Your explanation of how the start capacitor functions at startup is not accurate. The capacitor has no effect on run winding current. Neither does run current cause the start switch(or relay) contacts to open.
In the case of an internal start switch, the contacts are mechanically opened by a mechanism that forces the contacts open when the rpms increase. Typically that mechanism uses fly weights.
In the case of the start relay, a voltage is created in the start windings such that when rpms are high enough that voltage is sufficient to pick the relay(opening the contacts) and will continue to energize the relay until rpms fall off as the motor coasts down after power is removed from the run windings.

Is it remotely possible that "we" are on two journeys. That is - not talking about the same thing. There are many types of motors available and even more if you discuss older style motors.
In the original discussion, I see NO REFERENCE to two Shopsmith motors. Just two motors that the OP can not make run.
Nonetheless, there is now an argument (discussion) brewing that is based on the technology of the Shopsmith start and run windings, start switch, etc.
I have withheld many comments recently because it seems that some just like to argue for the sake of arguing OR to impress the membership with their broad based knowledge of absolutely everything. I come to the forum to learn from others and to help where I know I am able and that is it. Argue no more!!!

The thing is not to lose focus on the real topic.
The post was about 2 motors of different brands,1 unknown,, could they be reversed ,are they worth repairing and how to tell.
JPG'S last post makes sens to me ,,yet it does lack the name of the motor manufacture,,unless SS manufactures their own motors,,,???
I am very comfortable in standing behind the information in my post on testing capacitors ,checking for end play and bearing tightness in the motor ..
Again if you search out the motor name described in the post ,,,,,the information relates to fluid transfer motors .

You two are correct in that I made the assumption that he was referring to SS 3/4 hp motors. Guilty of not looking at the part # he listed. Guilty of assuming the Franklin motor was a ss version.
I agree a purpose of this forum is to share information and help each other, but the passing if inaccurate information is not a good thing and correcting same is not 'arguing'.
There were/are 4 manufacturers of motors used by shopsmith over the years. Those are he Franklin, A.O.Smith, GE and more recently Emerson. Only the Emerson has an internal splice that prevents access to separating the start winding from the run windings.
I also agree that this thread has gone off the original intent, but without further information as to what we are dealing with it cannot help the original poster.
