Same issue, power head out of my Mark V 81 model. Does someone have a link on disassembling the power head?

Tried blowing out all of the dust without disassembly, but still the same thing.

Additionally. (I picked up the SS Yesterday) the switch was disconnected. Where is the proper diagram for this model if anyone knows(Motor/power to switch.).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Welcome, and I'll try to point you to some recent discussions that may help you. Also, you may want to spend some time looking thru all of the links mentioned in the "sticky" thread at the top of the Maintenance and Repair Section. It includes much info on the general workings and maintenance of your Shopsmith. You'll learn about your particular model, and learn the differences between yours and the various other models. And, if you're lucky, the "Search" feature sometimes will shorten the time you need to search for a particular topic.

While your case may be differnt, my 1980 Mark V 500 has on several occassions just needed the motor removed, opened up, and all the dust blown out to get it running again.

Thank You Very much! Yes I need to disassemble completely but I could not get the inner belt pulley off (I forgot the actual name I apologize). I removed the key but it would not budge. I will look around,. Thank you very much.

Ah yes. I read that thread, but it does not go into any detail about removal of the motors casing. I removed all of the screws on the rear of the casing and the outer "Sheave" (Remembered the name when I saw it). Removed the key as well. The inner fan sheave I could not get loose. and Dont know how. I did use compressed air to as much as I could on the motor, but I could not get inside of it, which I believe is where my problem is.

The fan sheave is secured with a very tight set screw on top of the key.

Let us make sure we are referring to the same parts.

You removed the belt cover.

You removed the retaining clip and spring(that was not easy!)

You loosened the fan sheave set screw.

The key then came out???

The only thing holding the fan sheave on the shaft is crud accumulation.( it typically is stubborn to get off).


Now I believe you still have the motor residing in the motor pan. Four #3 Phillips screws secure the motor to the motor pan.

Only by removing the motor from the pan will give you good access to blowing out the motor.

Enough fer now.

Getting into my motor the first time was tough. If you are talking about removing the 4 long screws that hold the end caps on the motor, I had to use a screwdriver as a pry tool to get the end opposite of the fan sheave removed. My motor is a GE, and that end cap is on very good. Once the end cap is removed, there are several washers and spacers inside of the end cap between it and the bearing. Note the order in which they are stacked, as some are flat, some are slightly concave (or convex). You can clean out a good deal of dust with just this one end cap removed. To remove the end cap on the end with the fan sheave and the spring requires much more care. Most info I have seen discuss removing the fan sheave and its spring while the motor is still in the machine, and in the drill press position (vertical). I have done it with the motor removed, but requires a way to support motor while the spring is compressed. Attached is a Shopsmith information sheet on how to remove the fan sheave that is attached to the motor.

And here is a link to a Sawdust Session where the board is shown (starting at about 8 minutes in) being used to safely remove the retaining clip holding that spring:

Yes we are indeed on the same page. I removed everything in that order and the Fan sheave would not budge. I was apprehensive at prying at it so I did not adversely affect the motor.

And I did remove it from the housing on the machine itself. (Four small screws on the back and one on bottom of the pan.)

Can this endcap be removed without removing the fan sheave?? If so I was almost there before i put it all back together.

Thanks you both for the insight and for the links.. I want this thing running not taking up 6'x4' of space.

The sheave MUST be removed since the end cap bearing has to slide off the shaft. A wedge between the fan sheave hub and the end cap is likely necessary to get the fan sheave moving along the shaft. Mini steps and slowly!!!

Getting the end caps back on with the fan sheave attach can be very difficult depending upon which motor you have.

Do keep in mind that blowing it out is to reestablish the start switch contacts making.(as well as improve air flow) Sometimes blowing it out places saw dust between the contacts thus creating the problem.
