Dusty,,,,,,, after thinking about your question ,,,,,,about the cut being off center ,, and the conversation about using dado arbors for single saw blades ,,,,this may be why I haven't had issues using the dado arbor.

I don't usually bother with ZCI's but then I really like a sled for crosscutting and it has much the same effect. I badly need to make a new sled very soon and when I do I want it like one I saw somewhere (maybe Pinterest) where the bottom had a 3" wide replaceable strip to serve as a ZCI. As I recall it slipped in as a dovetail and was held in by one screw.
I do need to make a batch and I have stuff that I like. I have a batch of freebie samples of laminate flooring. Some of that stuff is really slick and tough. They are about 2' long and maybe 6" wide. If you know anyone in the flooring business they may have some out-dated samples to give away.
I also have a fair batch of wild cherry just over 1/4" thick X about 3' long X about 6" to 8" wide. I sawed it years ago for a guy who never came back for it. I kind of hate to cut it into inserts though.


I was looking at Pinterest at lunch and spotted a panel saw design I liked. I need to go back and look at it more closely. I have always just lifted sheets up on the tablesaw or onto saw-horses with a sheet of foam-board but I think they are making those sheet goods a lot heavier than they used to...

If what you have is working for you, there is no reason to alter what you are doing. It just looked unusual to me.

When I install a standard saw blade, with the quill fully withdrawn, and the carriage pushed firmly against the rubber bumper - my saw blade is nearly centered in the insert.

Now I do Main Table Alignment with that as a criteria and whenever (which is seldom) I have to move the table top, I adjust to dead center the saw blade. However, with the four arbors bolts all loose, the table has less than 1/8" of movement.

I assume that you are using standard Shopsmith arbors and that you are on a 510 type machine. If you are on a 500, ignore ALL that I have said. I have never set up a 500.

His inserts are NOT '500'.

I have the MKV with a 510 table , thanks for pointing this out , it will come in handy after the up grades .

Honestly I just eyeball them from underneath and go with it.

Wild cherry is getting pretty pricey around here ,,,, I bought some 4 1/4 from a Amish fella a few years ago and now wish I would have bought all he had.
Love the aroma .

The dove tail replaceable insert sounds like a good idea !!

I still toss the plywood on a set of wooden horses .

You have a '500' AND the one you are making those inserts for?

Insert in question is 510.

Kerf is quite a bit further off center that I am used to. But I am making assumptions about carriage, arbor and quill that might be incorrect. I just do not cut ZCI that way.

I am using a 510 table,,,,, on a MKV made in 1983

I haven't had any problems with the inserts or their performance ,,,,

I will check to see how close to center my saw is when I but them up like ya said , maybe I can learn something .

You mentioned the arbor

I favor the dado arbor for about every thing .

I haven't had any issues .
