I as thinking the same with the table and fence, it just seems practical

And much safer ,,the bigger table is much more stable and the way tube system is much more versatile .

The new 520 system appears to have a lot of extras built in .
It looks rather pricey though .

Thanks for the advice on the bandsaw, out of all the tools i know how to use the band jig and table saw are 3 that i have never dabbled with but i am excited, my dad is great with all of them so i have a good teacher, i never really knew what a jig saw was used for and you are right, it does look very addicting, this whole machine is addicting
i forgot my original question about the speed dial turning two full rotations, is that something that happens?
I will say though the one thing i did not do yet is adjust the high speed setting, which i would think could be an issue, y or n?

Go slow .

take your time .

The jig saw and drill press are probably the safest tools on your SS for a beginner ..

The lathe can be very fun and time consuming .

It can also be hazardous if you dont do things by the book,
Make sure the stock is secure in the lathe and the locks are all secure .

the band saw ,,well it has its hazards but if you keep a eye on where your fingers are and keep it adjusted properly it is rather safe .

May I suggest you read up on wood,,,,types ,, hardness of different woods ,, the difference in rift sawn ,,quarter sawn , flat sawn,,,the difference in pith and pitch,,kiln dried and air dried and the difference in how they react to being cut,,, how the test for moisture and why it is important, also how to true a board so it is straight when finished.

Dont forget ,, wood working started out with hand tools ,, .

A good set of hand tools is also a blessing and a necessity to have around.

If it is just a hobby,,,, or a way to pound out a dime,,,,,, this is a machine ,,,,, it should be respected as such

Clean up your mess after every use , and keep organized ,,,trip hazards in a wood shop can have bad results.


If you keep the interest I think you will do fine.

i havent even taken this baby for a test drive yet so for upgrades..table or otherwise..thank you for the advice. im mostly focused on just replacing what needs replacing right now
As for this crazy tailstock, i mean as i said this was the very first thing i did, and it became a mission, but the way my gpa had it set up, the tailstock was literally wedged underneath another work table which had all kinds of **&^ on it 100s of pounds of wood, boating anchors, you name it
the SS was probably only sticking out about 75%, there is a pole where he had it and i think he jammed it in there to make it fit
i loosened everything, followed the book, but this was years of being stuck in there, i really meant to start recording the whole escapade before we started, even after knowing much more now than i did a month ago about this baby, i dont think that thing was coming out without something outside the box but who knows
The heat was a drastic last ditch effort, we are in NY as well with lovely 20 degree winters so that may play a role, but even the tube that was stuck in the base took another hour to get out, it was nuts
needless to say, it was a learning experience and by far the most baffling thing so far
Thank you for commenting on the screws, in every pic or video or manual that is never mentioned as one of the differences

Well there is a wealth of knowledge here , I have learn't a lot in the short time I have been here. I don't think any one here will steer ya wrong.
