Bandsaw - new blade won't stay on

Re: Bandsaw - new blade won't stay on
Just a shot in the dark...is the new blade right side out...meaning are the teeth running downward when installed...pretty easy to have a blade flipped and not notice it running upside down, easy fix just flip it back around if it is...teeth running up will dig into the tires and run off pretty fast as you describe. I have got new blades that were inside out like that before and had them almost completely installed before I noticed it.

WOW!!!! 1/4" BEHIND lower wheel top.
This requires a couple of measurements to understand WHY that is the case.
Using that 24" straight edge, but lay it against the lower wheel. (24" too short - use a longer straight edge)
Then measure the distance from that same edge to both the top and bottom rim if the upper wheel. I do not know what that should be, but will measure it on my BS. (mine = 0 and about 1/4" at bottom and top of upper wheel)
In any event yours is not 'normal'. I guess that groove in the tires is compensating for incorrect positioning of the upper wheel. The arm supporting the upper wheel may be bent. Since your blades are riding against the guide bearings something is weird. Are the guide bearings the correct size???
If the bearings are correct both the cant angle is insufficient AND the arm is bent towards the back.

Your top wheel is bent in, top is out bottom is in. Do as Charles said and try to bend it out. The rule should be 1/4 inch out from the front of the lower wheel. The picture of your rule on the lower wheel means your top wheel is bent about a 1/2 inch back in too far. I suspect some one overtighten a blade or left the bandsaw sitting with blade tensioned too long.

Re: Bandsaw - new blade won't stay on
Resetting the cant is a reasonable thing to do here, but, when that is needed, the tracking is typically nearer the back of the upper wheel rim.
In your case it is actually correct, but the bottom of the upper wheel is too far back.
I am skeptical that resetting the cant angle only will get it all back to 'normal'.
I suspect someone attempted to get the wheels 'co-planer'(not good).
I would wedge the arm against the 'base. when recanting to prevent the result being the back of the top of the upper wheel being too close to the base.
I strongly feel replacing the arm is the best approach.

Re: Bandsaw - new blade won't stay on
I bought a Shopsmith 1/2" blade for resawing perhaps 6 months ago and had the same problems. I tried it on both of my Shopsmith bandsaws and the same thing happened on both, it ran towards the front and off.
I can run a different 1/2" blade in my bandsaw with no problem , never got around to following up on it with Shopsmith. Will likely try a Woodslicer next.

I don't think this is the issue but it wouldn't be a bad idea to check that the lower wheel is in the correct place. When I got my band saw the shaft had gotten knocked and the small keeper was bent. The keeper is the only thing keeping the wheel in the correct place. If you can move the bottom wheel in and out then that could be why you are seeing what you are seeing.

If it were 'out' too far the blade would be riding off the back side of the lower wheel(assuming the blade IS riding against the LOWER guide bearing).
BTW the measurement of the dimensions from a straight edge held across the lower wheel to the top and bottom rim of the upper wheel would reveal that 'inset'.

Re: Bandsaw - new blade won't stay on
Guys -- sorry for the delay but just to circle back and close this thread, I finally did replace the older tires with the urethane tires over the summer and haven't had a blade ride off yet.
Not sure if that was indeed the root cause, as I also had both wheels off the machine to replace the tires and had to recalibrate the blade tension settings when I reinstalled everything, but between all of that she hums along nice and smoothly now with several different blades I use regularly.
