Sir- I have and use 3 conical disks and 3 flat disks. To remove Shopsmith paper-

I heat the disk -gently- with a common propane torch, slide a spatula between disk and paper, pull in the paper disk. The sandpaper disk removes- then, while the metal disk is still warm, I spray with WD40. WD40 gels the glue. With some gentle scraping it is easily removed. Then a wipe or two with spray electrical cleaner- brake cleaner-

Always works quite well

I personally don't use the velcro system much due to the soft edges it gives, yes sometime that is what you are looking for and then it works great. Other times I want the crisp edges and have a collection of disks with different grits mounted. That way when the paper is worn I just replace it and since the introduction of the PSA disks it has been a lot less work then the old glue on days.

The sun or an oven set at 140 degrees and gloves works pretty well at getting the paper off. You may or may not have to clean the disk, a little added sticky stuff is not a problem, dust and crud is. Still not a big deal anyway.

It is so nice to just change disk to get the different grits....... and yes expensive. If I had to I'd do it again, it is just the best way I know of doing it.

Ed, I tried that velcro system. Once!

Yes, it changes VERY rapidly. But, sharp
corners, not going to happen.

Right now, 4 discs. Model 10 type.
One of them needs re-surfacing.
Here is my plan, pull apart my
Model 10, install 2 headstocks,
facing each other, but the right one,
only mounted on one waytube. (Doesn't
really which tube, but since the locks
are on the rear tube, on the right headstock,
I'll use that one.

2 sanding discs, the driven one with fine
paper on it. the warped one, on the right
headstock.

Well, you get the idea.
