A sluggish floating sheave will definitely contribute to hard turning of the speed control knob towards slow. Also that would cause excessive pulling of the clip on the button bearing/porkchop when moving towards fast. You cannot over lubricate either movable sheave.

Two things jump out in that pix.

The leaf spring on the porkchop arm appears displaced from being centered on the arm.

The wire loop is not a loop. Also it appears to be coming from the side of the bearing 'button' rather than the top/bottom. Neither does it have the fine 'coil' of it.

I hadn't noticed that JPG. I went back and found another pic and everything is there, just a bad angle in the first pic I guess. Had me scared for a minute there. :D
