A suit over 4X4's when will it end

Years ago the boss would have a fit every time he had to pay for a lumber order, imagine paying for 10k bdft of rough cut mahogany and losing 25% by the time the stock made it to the lay out table.


A contractor building condo's purchasing 2000 bdft of 4x4 and when ya figure out the actual bdft it was a few hundred short,,over a year or so thats a lot of money.

All this stress over dimension of dimension lumber.

The "4 x 4" refers to the dimension of the stick BEFORE it was sawn from the log.

Subtract the kerf width and the 'raw stick' is smaller.

Wait for it to shrink as it dries.

Then watch it get smaller as the rough stick is milled(planed) to remove rough sides and corners.

Then watch is vary with weather changes.

I have never understood why the x 5/8 change to x 1/2????(and sometimes 3/8 or 1/4)

Simple! Buy rough cut lumber and mill your own 4x4s. That is what the plaintiff should have had done.

Silly suit been perpetuated by a bottom feeding lawyer.
If there was a law that lawyers could not work on commission and total amount that could be won would be actual lost nothing more some of this silliness would stop. And bottom feeder lawyers would have to get a real job.

IMHO, the best solution would be to charge the plaintiff's attorney court costs for frivolous lawsuits. That should put the brakes on them pretty quick. As it stands, they get to roll the dice on the taxpayer's dime.

but on the topic, never noticed HD or Menards, but Lowes lists actual size, in very small print for sure, on all their dimensional lumber on the price/bar code label. Hard to believe HD and Menards or any other big box store where not doing the same. Tag usually say 2x4, 4x4 etc then right underneath it on the same tag, says actual size xxxx, the board itself may not have a tag, but the bind it sets in sure does, not the box stores fault, if you can't read...I don't see this getting any traction. Next thing you know folks will get upset their car isn't getting the mpg listed on the sticker...lol...when will it stop...oh my

I recently bought a 25lb barrel of 10d nails. I am here to guarantee that the barrel did not weight 25lbs and the 10 penny nails cost me more than that.

Why is a 10d nail called 10d?
