My shop has a window at each end, just below the roof line; I'm lucky that I can keep them open and seldom get more than a couple of rain drops from the one facing West. Since they're up high, they don't take any wall space away from me, either.
I inherited a window air conditioner when we had the house air conditioned last week. I mounted it in the space that had been used by a fixed window. I lost a little sunlight but it's close to an outlet and didn't take up anymore wall space.
I just have to remember not to turn on everything at once until the shop is rewired!
