A while back I was using my SS scroll saw , broke the blade ,, didnt have any ,,, was about to go to the store when it hit me,,,,just cut off a piece of a broken band saw blade!!!!

They last longer any way.

Over the years I sharpened thousands of chainsaw chains... I had several tree guys as regular customers as well as a bunch of farmers. In all of those years I only had one customer complaint. That was a fairly close neighbor and was quite a few years ago. He said that he installed it on his saw and tried to cut wood but that it would only chip at the bark a little. He had then taken just the chain to another sharpener that I also knew and was a friend of mine. He said that the other sharpener looked at it closely and said that he could see nothing wrong with it but he reground it anyway. He said that after that it cut fine... You know what he did... He didn't think so... He was / is pretty stubborn and kind of squirrelly so I didn't even try to convince him of what he did, I just gave him his money back.
My sharpener friend said that he knew that the guy had put it on backward but he knew him too.
BTW, that sharpener friend? Years later my son married his granddaughter. Great daughter in law. She and our son live just down the road at the north end of the farm.

Well, color me stupid! I learned at an early age to ask knowledgeable people for advice on problems rather than puzzling it out for myself. Saves a lot of time, eliminates errors and I've learned a lot of things I wouldn't have learned otherwise. And that includes a LOT of things on this forum.

I think Forrest Gump's mom had it right: "Stupid is as stupid does."

I have never really embraced the word stupid which really was intended to describe someone who is 'incapable' of learning.

One of the most brilliant minds I ever knew suffered a stroke and was rendered incapable of speaking clearly, walking stable, or interacting verbally or in writing.

Intellectually he was still there, as cognizant as his peers who shunned him, shamefully.

There is often a misuse of ignorant, which generally means uneducated, often in a single topic, but perceived by other as'in life itself'. That too bothers me.

I think more often we should use unaware, and in these forum it can be difficult to gain that awareness due to the lack of sophistication in the software used in the forums, due to its age and the cost to migrate and upgrade it, nothing more.

I know we answer the same questions over and over with each generation of folks getting familiar with these remarkable tools we love.

One of the best ways to learn is to ask questions. Children are fond of asking a lot of questions and this story speaks to that nature.

A little boy tugged on his father's sleeve one evening, just as his father settled in his recliner to read the newspaper. "Daddy, how hot is the sun?" His father, not wanting to be bothered replied, "Son, I don't know." Tugging again on his sleeve, the boy inquired enthusiastically, "Daddy, how far away is the moon?" "Son, I don't know." "Daddy why is a horse bigger than a dog?" "Son, I really don't know," the father responded rather irritated. Pulling his father's sleeve again, he asked softly, "Daddy, do you mind me asking you all these questions?" Looking up from the paper, the father says, "Heaven's no Son. If you don't ask questions, how are you going to ever learn anything?"

We all get there some times in our busy schedules. I try to occasionally write papers and restore illegible OEM documents in an attempt to help others find their way through the Shopsmith maze. It isn't always clear where to look.

If it were any other company, it would have died and blown away four or five decades ago, the machines would have been melted down in to other machines that would have been melted down as well.

Quality and workmanship endure, and the passion of things Shopsmith has been going on for 70+ years. I have a 10E sn 1414, made in the first months of Magna / Shopsmith's production in 1947, running reliably and accurately in 2017.

That's generations of family history. Hard to envision your great-grand father building a piece of machinery that you still use today, but that is the Shopsmith story.

We have to tell it. Sometimes, over and over.

Those are just my thoughts. I truly am not directing my comments toward anyone and do not mean to offend anyone here. If I have, it was not my intent. Share the passion.
