Illustrations are there that you can download. Also go to the My Google Drive link and download Buying a used Shopsmith Revisited PDF. It has a lot of detail. Cutaway drawings and a discussion relative to the problem you describe.


You can fix this. Shopsmith has the parts sounds like a speed control sheave, a retainer clip and possibly a quadrant.

I called Shopsmith and I will say the reception was less than I expected. For some reason the parts schematic is hidden on their website. I wrote down what I saw was broken and someone mentioned a bearing that may be bad. All I see is the shaft end with a pin through it that is broken. Picture to follow.

I cannot find the parts schematic again, and search is useless.

Thank you for link. I use an IPad and it is a pain. I still don't see a bearing, I guess the reference was the one that supports the shaft through the housing. Picture didn't work, too big....Yada yada, I give up. Will see what comes in the mail. Replacement for the clip seems straight forward.

You will not find a bearing. It is a part of the control sheave.

Did you get 112 also?


Now about the cause of the clip pulling off.

The floating sheave on the motor shaft needs to be oiled religiously every 10 hours of use(ditto the control sheave). If it sticks when adjusting the speed towards fast, the control sheave will not follow the porkchop and the clip will be pulled by the porkchop. The purpose of the clip is to hold the inner race of the bearing(in the control sheave) so it does not rotate with the outer race(control sheave). If the floating sheave is sluggish, the porkchop will pull against the clip.

The belt provides the force to open the pulley movable sheaves. The spring on the motor shaft causes the floating sheave to maintain belt tension.

You cannot over oil!!!!

The most common cause of failure of the speed control is lack of lubrication, second is aggressive adjusting of the speed control(insufficient time for the sheaves to shift).
