Very nice work Charles. I have plans to make one quite similar to yours for my grandson. Have taken ideas from several I have seen and combined them into the best design for my taste. The pieces are still a big question mark for me. Until I saw yours I thought the lathe was the only way to go but now I have something more to think about.

You can make the pieces any size you want by enlarging the silhouette from the Shopsmith plans. To find the plans - click "
WOODWORKING RESOURCES" then "Articles and Projects", then "chess and checkers" (beneath Bandsaw projects).
The only trick is to make sure your wood blanks are square.
After clicking on the sihlouettes and printing - I enlarged them on a copy machine and cut out the paper and glued them to a 1/8" piece of hardboard. After sawing out the hardboard I had templates for all pieces. It was pretty easy using a sharpie to trace around the templates.
