You might not believe this, but I(not having an 'original') am very likely to have a misunderstanding. What JSB says is likely more accurate.
Actually I think I was wrong.

The major difference to me, and I own both, is the Cast Iron Bed on the Pro Planner opposed to the covered aluminum of the Shopsmith Mounted one.
Next difference is the 5,750 RPM of the Pro Planer opposed to the 3000 - 4100 variable cutter-head speed.
Third would be the 1 3/4 HP of the Pro Planner opposed to the 1 1/8 via the Headstock powered unit.
Most important to me is not having to lift and set up the Shopsmith Mounted one.
You can convert to a stand, and add a bigger motor, but you still have the aluminum bed, so in that sense it is not a Pro Planer per se.

Both are very good. The in-feed roller and chute upgrades are well worth it.
Each performs well. I am considering dedicating a unit to mount mine, and have Sanding Disk and Table Set-up on the other end most of the time.

The attachment is from a 2003 Catalog back when I bought my 50th Anniversary Edition 520 which I use a good bit.

Unfortunately the Pro Planer and comparisons are no longer to be found on the SS site. Neither are the power stands.
