There should be no reason the tubes can not be tightened if you have the stock hardware. Close inspection to see if there is any damage to the parts should be carried out. It is also possible to use the wrong length of fastener, if they are too long they could bottom out in the casting and thus not be able to be tightened. I measured mine at 1-3/4".
Again for those who might be reading this but never had a look see at the parts this is the bar and the two fasteners that secure the tubes.

If you say so but I still have serious doubt that there is an interference fit. Yes, I do know what the Shopsmith document says.jsburger wrote:Not so. Look at the SS page for the double tilt upgrade. There are many of us with the dual tilt. We are not experiencing what you are. Much easier doing it that way then the upside down method.So, there was no tube mix up. The tubes are all the way in to the stops. What appears to be the problem is that there is enough slop around the holes that the only pressure point is the clamp. The extreme weight of the Power Pro is more then the one clamp can take in the upright position. Like in the drill press mode.This was not a problem with the old base. It was rock solid.
Those 'ribs' on the outer side are what positions the tubes horizontally(c-c)distance. They are differently sized on the old greenies/goldies that have the larger tubes. The beveled ends of the clamp force the tubes against those ribs(all the surfaces with a red arrows in Ed's pix above).reible wrote:Using a rule it looks like it can almost take a 1-7/8 tube. So as is the larger tubes will not just slip in.
There could be other reasons for not wanting them to mate??
