I'm starting to put my mini 500 together today and since the tubes are not yet mounted I pulled the bar and fasteners.

There should be no reason the tubes can not be tightened if you have the stock hardware. Close inspection to see if there is any damage to the parts should be carried out. It is also possible to use the wrong length of fastener, if they are too long they could bottom out in the casting and thus not be able to be tightened. I measured mine at 1-3/4".

Again for those who might be reading this but never had a look see at the parts this is the bar and the two fasteners that secure the tubes.

I seriously doubt that there would be a problem installing the oversized tubes . That is not a tight fit, by any means.
Not so. Look at the SS page for the double tilt upgrade. The larger bench tubes do not fit and require you to buy the 1 3/4" bench tubes. Also the model 500 table does not have interchangeable table tubes so you have to have a 510+ table to upgrade to the double tilt.

If you say so but I still have serious doubt that there is an interference fit. Yes, I do know what the Shopsmith document says.

Send me a pair of 1 7/8" bench tubes and I'll try it for myself. :)

All this discussion re whether they will 'fit' into the holes, but nothing re the c-c distance that will vary. ;) Maybe it matters not.

Using a rule it looks like it can almost take a 1-7/8 tube. At least side to side at the start of the opening. The flashing from the casting is not clean so it is very hard to tell if it would actually go in without some filing. But that doesn't matter as the vertical will not fit do to structural parts in the casting and on the outside there are two ribs that would also get in the way. Note the red arrows in the image. Now if you really wanted to get them in I think you could machine or grind the bits away and have it slide in.

So as is the larger tubes will not just slip in.

There could be other reasons for not wanting them to mate??

So everyone is clear of what I am trying to explain I will try to be clearer. The Shopsmith that I installed the double tilt on was a late 90's 510 that I upgraded to the 520 table about 5 years ago. Then last year I installed a Power Pro and just recently the double tilt. So the discussion on the tube diameter is not the problem. When I installed the double tilt I installed one end at a time. Much easier doing it that way then the upside down method.So, there was no tube mix up. The tubes are all the way in to the stops. What appears to be the problem is that there is enough slop around the holes that the only pressure point is the clamp. The extreme weight of the Power Pro is more then the one clamp can take in the upright position. Like in the drill press mode.This was not a problem with the old base. It was rock solid.

There are many of us with the dual tilt. We are not experiencing what you are. So what is different with your unit then the rest of ours?

I've had my first dual tilt for some years now and it is rock solid.

I have a second one that I have had together and it too was rock solid.

Right now I have the second one apart pending some changes so I can take pictures to show what mine looks like and perhaps you will see something that looks different between yours and mine??? I have a pretty full day tomorrow and Sunday but I will see if I can work something in.

You could also take pictures of yours so we might be able to pick out something.

Other then that I don't see much of a way we can help you. Well unless you are willing to add your general address and then we might have a member near by who could check it out in person.

Those 'ribs' on the outer side are what positions the tubes horizontally(c-c)distance. They are differently sized on the old greenies/goldies that have the larger tubes. The beveled ends of the clamp force the tubes against those ribs(all the surfaces with a red arrows in Ed's pix above).

Do you have the clamp beveled ends pressing against the tubes?
