I was a patternmaker in the NAVY, and they taught us how to make joints. I watched that video and it was quite interesting.
The test we had in glue joints was the same one, if the joint failed you flunked. On end grain joints we would do what they called "Sizing". You would apply a small amount of glue to each surface and let it dry. Then after it's dry you apply a little more glue and clamp it. If the joint failed when they tried to break the board you failed. Believe me, the joints held.
I have things I made in the NAVY 45 years ago, that were stored in my mom's attic that temps hit 0-100 degrees and the joints are still tight.
I never used much glue, but I always wiped mine off with a damp cloth and never had any problems with weak joints or glue stains after finishing.
