I have an aluminum headrest and a iron one. I'm not really sure if it aluminum but that is what it is commonly called. What I found that was interesting is if you look at the list one column has headrest information and the appearance of "aluminum" and iron are a pretty mixed bag. It also shows the two hole and 4 hole data.

The appearance of the two are mixed starting in '47 and continues through the chart. It doesn't show a switch over point that is obvious, well at least to me.

It is also interesting that the belt guards come in at least two materials, one of them is magnesium. I have one of each of these. The one I cut up for access was the iron one. It also makes me wonder if "aluminum" is always aluminum, I would have guessed the belt guard was AL except for the warning on the instructions for modification about it possibly being magnesium.

Also another part change to note in the Cast Iron vs. Aluminum. The Quill Collar when changed from the bolt on style to the ones that would accept attachment were first Cast Iron than Aluminum. I have a Cast Iron one that came on 10E serial number 8865. It's a bit bulkier than the Aluminum ones. Sorry I do not have a picture of just it.
Does the pulley guard in your picture on that post have the flat top? That's one other thing different about mine from most of what I've seen. Mine has a flat top, but does not have the extra material surrounding the area closer to the headstock like most of the flat topped guards I've seen pictures of.

I guess if the iron mounting plate is the more suspect piece anyway, I won't be so nervous about the headrest being potentially weaker than an iron one. I will be looking into ways to modify the bench to reduce the risk of any parts impacting each other though.

Everett I mentioned this in the PM, but do you have any more context on the illustration showing the bench being extended by 6" if the jointer was purchased? I'm interested to know if the intention was that the jointer sat flat on the bench when upside down, or if there was any kind of bumper recommended to keep it away from the headset.

I too have a non-magnetic jointer headrest. On 10ER #85493, accompanied by 4E jointer #4225.

To my knowledge, the extended bench allowed it to sit upside down and rest on the bench.

Speculation was that this was when the marketing folks asked for the rounded tilt base to be shortened, to the squared off one, so they could still advertise that it took up about the same space as a bicycle.

With the jointer on that seemed a moot point, but that was the speculation on the bench length for the base machine.

Badtheba,
Good catch on the pulley cover. It is an early cover without the extra on the sides with a flat top. That was on 10E serial number 8865. My 10E serial number 4708 has a rounded top one.

The "dog ears" on the mounting plate is the weaker part. I have seen one broken off. When moving the Jointer with it attached use caution, it's heavier and trickier to attach to it's headrest than the Jointers with mounting tubes.

Everett,
It appears the Base was shortened by 1952 according to Skip's survey and my own information which is before the 4E Jointer came out sometime in 1953. When flipped down it does not rest on the bench top but depending on mounting adjustments is about 1-3/8" or more above the bench top. Of course we don't know how long they had been planning the Jointer.

Do you have the jointers for either of these headrests? It would be nice to see if there is a pattern of Aluminum and Cast Iron Jointer Headrests.

I don't think he meant he had the 4E headrest but I could be wrong. As far as the materials used, my second 10ER I picked up today had most of the paint flaked off the belt guard. The sheen and lack of oxidization definitely reminds me more of magnesium like my circular saw base than aluminum.

I also have two jointers, three jointer head rests, and two hinge plates. The three jointer head rests I believe to be aluminum, they are not cast. Both hinge plates are cast.
Would like to purchase another hinge plate if anyone has one they don’t need.

I only have stock headrests, none for jointer nor do I own any shopsmith jointer, and I have no interest in shopsmith jointers other then reading posts as general interest. The only point I wanted to make is that the materials seem to all over the place over the years and may not have been a swap over but just a mixed bag depending on what was in stock when they put a machine together.
