for me the carbide tipped blades seem to stay sharp longer . one trick when cutting dados and not fooling with the shims would be to cut the dado first and then adjust the width of the stock on the table saw or router leaving 1/16 in shoulder or so on each side the same depth as the dado , makes for a very clean dado joint and for me it seems easier then messing with the shims . jmo
