I have never understood why the gauge does not come marked from Shopsmith.
A woodworking forum for woodworking hobbyist and woodworking projects related and unrelated to the Shopsmith MARK V

Huh????dusty wrote:With a properly adjusted set of knives does the old gauge not move up and down as the cutter head is rotated. It should because the mark is to be an indicator of where the cutting edge of the blade is positioned when the blade is at the "high point of the arc" and the blade moves "in an arc".
The blade, when adjusted properly, and using the new gauge should travel on the arc; the gauge should not move at all when the cutter head is rotated.
I do not believe the gauge is your issue.
Those gauges with the arc work exactly the same as do those gauges with the mark.

Mine dates back to 1978/1979 when I bought the ProPlaner. I believe it was delivered as part of the ProPlaner. I say that because I have no receipt/shipping document that lists the gauge.chapmanruss wrote:Dusty,
The picture I posted earlier is of my Gauge that I bought about two and a half years ago. Godavid2 who started this thread has a picture of his Gauge that he just bought which is the same as mine without a mark, just like mine came from the factory. It is the same as the one Nick uses in his video from 2008 that you linked. It appears they have been using the same Gauge since at least 2008 or before you got yours. I have not seen an early manual for the Planer and did not know of one with an arc. Maybe Godavid2 has the early manual and can post a picture of that Arc Gauge in use from the manual or someone else out there has the early Planer Manual and can enlighten us.
