PVC doesn't do well with a hole saw. The plastic melts and makes a mess on the saw and then there is the disk on the drill bit after........ not to mention that none of mine are long enough to make it through both sides of the pipe with out some extension....

If I ever make another one and I think I will, I will go back to what worked for me this time. If you get a chance try your hole saw, I know mine don't cut it but perhaps the ones you have might.

I know I am showing my ignorance, but, why not make it out of wood?

This was a video tip from Woodsmith if I remember right. They showed the end result but not how to make it. I use PVC pipe for projects since it is cheap and pretty easy to work with. A 5 foot section of the 2" pipe is $4.59, I used 31" so I could make yet another rack or another project, so to me that is a pretty good value.

When I was in the Rockler store they had a rack for $20, not a bad buy but it held less clamps and I would have had difficulties mounting it where I wanted to put it.

Yes you could go with wood, a 2" dowel is only slightly more expensive but you could also go a completely different direction and design your own out of cheap dimensional wood......

If or should I say when I make another one of these I will likely go with PVC again. I have a piece of 1-1/2" that I got for another project but I could also see going with that for my next rack since the clamps are smaller.

Well I've got a bunch of copper tubing to cut up and solder so I best get back to that job.

Great idea. I am going to start on a smaller version this weekend. I think I will spray paint mine to give it more of a consistent look and cover up all the markings.
