Trust...it is a type of putty. Try a proper size drill bit in your fingers. I got mine out using a dental pick

After reading your post again I am now wondering if you don't have a bent quill shaft. The run out that you mentioned along with the noise might well point to that. At least it is worth a long look before you start buying parts that might or might not need replacing.

And yes that will be a hard putty in the hole, I too took mine out with a dental pick like tool.

It was suggested, early in this thread, that you should remove the quill. If the noise goes with it....well

You also indicated that you had recently purchased this Mark 7. I suggest that you get advice from Shopsmith on how to proceed. Installing new bearing or shafts would likely be a cost to you that should be covered by the warranty. Depending, I suppose, on the real meaning of "recently".

To the best of my knowledge, the Mark 7 warranty does not state "original owner only is covered" by the warranty.

True(maybe it still is), it appears he does not have an electronics problem. Good point!!!
