Yup - the experiment is to see how the block performs directly mounted on the ShopSmith spindle with set screw vs. the threaded spindle.

One way to adapt the block as it was intended to be used (threaded spindle)
would be to use a Shopsmith Router Chuck #555191 with a short section of a ½"x13 bolt mounted in the chuck. You would then only have to drill and tap the block for the ½x13 thread and screw it onto the bolt. I still don't think this would be very satisfactory for a project of any size.
