with having three model 500's from the early 50's and early 60's all tables are aluminum. no cast iron in any. i'm only guessing but if he has a cast iron table it is either a 10E/10ER or he just thinks the table is iron. i would give it the "magnet" test. maybe Bill Mayo will answer.

WHEN did the 505 come out? I didn't see it on the listing.

All the Mark Vs (1954-2008) I have seen have aluminum main and extension tables. Since I have only been disassembling and storing 10E/10ER parts, I believe the 10 series tables are cast iron. They sure are heavy to move. I have a cast iron main table from a Total Shop that I mounted on my drill press Shopsmith 500.

I am knot sure exactly when SS quit producing the model 500 and replaced it with the model 505, as I am not exactly clear when the 505 was first made available, but on page 3 of the latest catolog that I have (Shopsmith Father's Day 2008 sale), there is a chart showing the differences between the models 500, 505, 510 and 520. The description of the model 500 features is a column headed with a picture of the model 500 and a caption that reads "Mark V's Made before 1990". To the right of that is a column with a description of the model 505 and a picture of the 505 with a caption that reads "Anniversary Mark V's with Model 505 Table System". The remaining two columns are dedicated to the models 510 and 520. I recall seeing this very same chart in all of the major printed catologs back to the first one that I received in recent history]believe[/I] that the anniversary model was available before 1990, so this chart makes me believe that there was an overlapping period, when you could purchase either the model 500 or the model 505, but the model 500 was no longer available after 1989. Can anyone reading this, that knows, please set the record straight?

i believe the model 510 actually came before the model 505. for their 50th anniversary they wanted a low cost special so the they kept the floating tables, two extension tubes and the support legs and called it the "505". someone feel free to correct me if i am wrong. (it has happened before lol)

I am like you; I do knot really know, but I believe that the first "anniversary" model was a 1963 505.

Wasn't the Brown, Gold and Tan anniversary model available for two or three years (1960-1963)?
(The one Nick is rebuilding during the Sawdust Sessions was built in 1964)

If a Mark V has a table other than the small Mark V 500 table - is it not a Mark V 505 (555861) or later?

Is it true that the Mark V 510 is Gray (Rough) and first became available in 1985 with an "B" headstock.

The "C" headstock was introduced in 1991 (555924) and this is when the Red Safety Switch was introduced.

Notice that in the Mark V serial numbers chart, in the years 1985-1986-1987, there are two sets of running serial numbers. I believe these are Mark V 500s and Mark V 505's (the larger numbers being 500 s).

You are correct. I bought my (Magna) SS in 1964. It is a "brown, gold and tan" model. I have subsequently upgraded to a 520.

I believe YES to all your questions. Check http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/toolhistory.htm for when the Mark V lines were introduced.

There was only one size main table for the Mark V until the 505/510 (1985). Of course, I have 500s with the Total Shop cast iron table and with the longer and wider (with expansion table) Mark VII main tables on my 500s.

I have owned 2 Shopsmiths with a pretty crinkled grey finish and serial numbers less than 3000 that was made sometime in the 70s.

A1,I have a catalog from spring/summer 1989, it lists the 500 and the 510.
