While you have the motor out I would recommending checking the bearings in the Idler Shaft, Drive Sleeve and Quill. Do all of these turn freely? Sticky bearings will put extra strain on the motor and could be the cause of the motor's problem. This is also a good time to lubricate the Sheaves of the Pulleys on the Idler and Motor shafts. Do a good general clean-out of the headstock and properly lubricate the moving parts. Not all moving parts should have oil or grease. Remember oil and grease attract saw dust and make a "sticky" mess. Below is a link to the Shopsmith Mark V 500 Summary Manual here on the Shopsmith website.
