It's not returnable, so I'd really prefer not to have to buy another.
Just buy the correct arbor. Turning that thing is not an option IMO.

In answer to your other question about the upper guard, yes that is the correct upper guard for a 500.

For the arbor, it looks to me like you have the 5/8" arbor for a 505-510-520. It is much beefier than the 5/8" arbor for a 500, and as already mentioned, longer.

I purchased the longer version by mistake for my 500, and it still fit all the way on the spindle, so maybe your spindle or arbor just have some burrs preventing the arbor from going on all the way.

I still have the older cast aluminum lower guard, so cannot tell if the lower guard is correct for a 500 or not.

Thank you both for your reply.

Now it is clear to me that the item I purchased was for the wrong model. Just to clarify, it fits on the quill fine. It just interferes with the lower guard, and even then only a little.

Since the item was sold to me as a model 500 arbor, I will attempt to return it.

If that fails, I might try turning down the OD a bit so it clears the guard (unless there is a reason not to? I just can't see one yet :) I've got a fairly nice lathe and mill, so unless it is hardened I should be able to modify it to fit. )

Now I see what you meant by interference with the guard.

With my older model cast aluminum lower guard, the larger / longer arbor can be used on a 500, but the table position and/or the quill must be adjusted to get the blade within the table saw slot. Just a little more fiddlin' is required.

With the right arbor for the right model machine, the blade is more or less centered automatically when the table carriage is pushed up tight to the headstock, with the proper size rubber bumper on the way tube in between the two.

Thanks John, I was not aware that the 5/8 500 saw arbor was also that shape. But honestly I'm skeptical that the arbors shown are 500, they don't look right to my eye. The PN listed, 555321, is depicted in the more traditional style in Russ's 'everything arbors' post: https://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/view ... 71#p260771 Possible, of course, that SS changed it without changing the PN but that's not what they did when they changed the 510/520.

If you have the documentation you can check the PN or use the measurements I provided earlier to confirm the arbor. I'm virtually certain, based on the pics, that you have the 510/520 arbor. Also I can confirm that the lower guard in your pics is not the same as the 510/520 guard. I presume, but can't confirm, it is one of the 500 alternate versions.

In the new pics it appears to me that the reported interference is due to the large diameter of the arbor at the spindle end, and not based on arbor length. That was not what I expected. But I agree with the others that a 500 arbor is what you need. (And it needs to not look like the one shown on the SS website that John referred to if I'm correctly understanding the diameter aspect of the interference.)

Perhaps someone here that has upgraded a 500 to 510 or 520 will offer to trade arbors with you. Win/win in my opinion. I would do this if I had a suitable arbor for you.

Thanks all! The situation is becoming very much more clear. As you say, it's a diameter issue.

I'd certainly be interested in trading arbors if anybody was interested. The one I have is nice/brand new... It just doesn't clear my guard! It's located in Massachusetts (but can/will ship). If anybody is interested please PM me.

That arbor needs to be up against the knurled knob.

Working on it! :) You don't happen to want to trade arbors do you? :D

I do not need a 520 arbor, but would trade for a '500' if no one else does.

I may have spoke too soon! The arbor have is a 520, but is the other(small body) style arbor.

I will look further if no one else offers.
