You said you do not know the serial number because the label has faded. I am guessing it has a label below or above the vent plate, like the one shown in the picture below, or the label is below the bottom of the warning label on the belt cover near the speed control.
Mark V tools with this kind of label use date codes as the serial number and have since December 1987. If the label is at the bottom of the warning label on the belt cover near the speed dial that label placement changed in 2002.
All Mark 5 and Mark V tools made prior to December 1987 have an actual serial number on the Belt Cover Vent Plate at the bottom like the one shown below.
This may help you get at least an approximation of when your Shopsmith was made.
