This may or may not help, but I find that sometimes if the carriage lock is tight the headstock doesn't want to slide easily. That is, I have to unlock both the carriage and the headstock and then the headstock moves freely. Somehow the carriage lock seems to be putting a bind in the tubes, I guess. Never have tried to measure it, and it really isnt a problem, just have to remember to re-lock the carriage after the headstock has been moved. I wax everything at least annually, been doing that for decades, and never have noticed any wax build up.
