A rare occurrence, but when you successfully advance one of your pawns to your opponent's last row, you can exchange the pawn for any other piece. Usually, the choice if for a queen. But if you haven't already lost your own queen, there's no piece to substitute for the pawn. The usual solution is to take some other piece you've lost, like a bishop or a rook, and designate it as a queen but that gets confusing for everyone. The second queen solves this rare problem.
