There has to be a reason a PO put that hub on the shaft. The shaft may be damaged and the retaining ring may not be an option at this point.

Once you get the hub off you will know for sure.

Be VERY careful as this has the ingredients for harm.

BTW a greenie is a Mark 5.

After reading JPG's comments, I realized my terminology wasn't correct. I went back and edited my post to correct "spring clip" to "retaining ring", and added some additional comments. Since that post is on the previous page, you might miss seeing them, so, please go back and take another look.

I believe your original would have been a cap rather than the washer. The cap is cylindrical with a washer-like closure on one end. Held in place by the same snap ring. The spring compresses into the open end. I'm not aware that it makes any functional difference, but thought you should be aware in case it does. The springs are also slightly different, more of a flat-wire spring on the newer motors that use the washer. I have used both the washer and flat wire spring on a 3/4 HP motor and they worked fine together.

Well, it was penetrating oil to the rescue! Plus vice grips and persistence (and a little harsh language to boot). Once the hub came off and I CAREFULLY let the spring go, I can see there's a groove for a snap ring, so it's back to Ace Hardware to get one. The collet is cracked from the key weigh sliding out, so I'm not sure what to do about that.

The two sheaves required even more penetrating oil to slide off the axle, as they kept getting stuck at the end. Once all was removed, I could see where to reinsert the 4 hex nuts for housing reassembly. There is indeed scraping damage from the fan blades on the back of the first sheave. I'll try adding a washer before the first sheave to see if that works. I'll also add a large washer to back up the new snap ring where the hub was.

Get a piece of key stock while at hardware store. Get a second retaining ring instead of a washer to space out the fan sheave.

A semi permanent fix for the floating sheave is to press the raised piece of the hub back in place and wrap a strap around the hub to hold in in.

Dress off any remaining burrs at the end of the shaft.

Not understanding about the key stock or 2nd retaining ring. There's no groove at the base of the axle for a retaining ring.

The 'key' stock needs to be replaced. The current 'key'(in the keyway on the shaft and the hub) looks bent(it needs to be straight).

The retaining ring merely rides high on the shaft and serves the spacing purpose you alluded to with a washer, but reduces the clearance(fan more effective). A groove is not needed. A THIN washer would work as well.

Ok, thanks. The key is actually straight and not bent. In the photo it's riding high and coming out of its slot. I'm wondering if a thin hose clamp would hold up and keep that key from sliding out like that over time. I thought about a zip tie, but I'd like to honor this 65 year old machine and not make a temporary repair that some future owner will have to deal with.
