I'm there with you. I've found, though, that I can generally modify existing models that are made in OpenSCAD, which is a descriptive plain text language that generates models that can be exported to .STL files. I've also played a tiny bit with TinkerCAD and think I could do some simple things in it and have directly modified at least one or two .STL files using it.
