Doug,

yes, "air hole" was exactly what I was thinking. I found myself torn between one hole length-wise or whether a second hole would be needed at right angles to the first through the bottom of the dado. I'm not knowledgeable enough in forensics to know how far down the throat objects of this size get stuck. I'll ask if the nurses in the family know and see what they say.

Last report on the logs.. My fingers are tender and sore from all the sanding on the belt sander. Spent 2 days of my free time just to sand logs and round the edges. All the small corner logs do have a hole drilled in them as suggested.

Wife helped me color the logs with Rite dye.. Red, green, yellow, brown.

All and all, followed the plans recommended on this forum:

Used 4 each 1X4X48, clear pine
1 each 1X6X24. clear pine
4 each Bx of Rite dye

Total cost for all materials: $34.

Time spent: bout 6 hours... 1/2 hour of that time was tool setups.
