Shopsmith has used several chucks over the years so you might want to check with them to make sure the key you are ordering fits the chuck you have. It could be that has been the constant while the chucks have changed but it wouldn't hurt to check it out... someone like Bill Mayo could maybe tell us that???? Bill you out there?

Look for the jacobs code [KK]! It fits a 9/32" hole in the chuck. These are the two things to look for for that chuck. There are many many WRONG sizes that are "close". I have found them @ Home Depot (<$10); reasonable I think (for retail)! Other true hardware stores should carry them. happy hunting!

For Y'all wondering about "old" jacobs 3326 (think 10E/R...) chuck, it takes a different key. Code (I am pretty sure) is [32] or [k32] and fits a 1/4" hole in chuck.

p.s. "Y'all" is "southern" for "youse guys"! I stop now.

Jacobs Chuck key needed

Post by billmayo »

Yes, there are a few different size drill chucks made for Shopsmiths. First measure the pilot hole. I find 1/4", 9/32" and 5/16" pilot holes. Then I measure as carefully as possible from the center of the pilot hole to the bottom of the teeth valley on the drill chuck for the radus and double it for the diameter of the chuck key teeth. I find 3/8" or 1/2" or 5/8" or 3/4" for the max diameter of the chuck key teeth. I use both measurements to buy the proper chuck key. I have been buying all the 9/32" pilot hole B&D (U1533) chuck keys ($2.00) that WalMart stocks locally for the past couple years. I have ordered quite a few chuck keys from Northern Tool company that works. I have not brought any of the 4-in-1 chuck keys as I find the individual chuck keys are cheaper for each drill chuck.

I was surprised when the chuck key with the 520 didn't fit the Jacobs chuck that came with the 500. I have a Black and Decker 1/2" portable drill w/ a key that fit and considered hijacking the key for the Jacobs chuck/SS. I took a chance on the HF 4 in 1 key. The 4 in 1 fit the Jacobs chuck and the chuck that came w/520.

OK, I may still hijack the B & D key and put the 4 in 1 with the portable drill(s) and maybe find uses for the other two of four keys!

Thank you, Rob for this bit of information. I have added this info to my spread sheet of seldom needed but vital information.

There is just so much information available online. One can go into data overload without even trying.

What is the critical dimension when attempting to pick a chuck key]http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/pr ... k&L1=Chuck[/url]

A bit pricey if purchased from Grainger. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/3L998

Looking a bit further, it could be a Jacobs K2 (Grainger 4YP25).

If I had to order one, I think I would not. I'd probably go to Ace (with chuck in hand) and look for a key that feels like it fits. If that became fruitless, I'd just have to go to the industrial park and check with Grainger.

Of course, I could always order one from Shopsmith.

My original MKV 500, bought in '83, has a different chuck & key from the newer Shopsmiths. Thus, if you have one of the older chucks, the new key will not fit.

I also discovered that the older chuck will not close on a 1/16" drill bit. The new chucks will.

Hi,

According to the information the K32 key is the one that works with any of the 32xx and 33xx series chucks. My guess is that you have something wrong in the part numbers or a key that doesn't meet specification.

I was watch a show on coffee last night on PBS. These guys were starting up a coffee shop and were buying these different coffees in bags... they then hired a person who know something about coffee, the only thing different was the stamp on the bag... same beans. So what I'm saying is just because it says K32 or the package did it doesn't mean that is what you got.

I guess there is no hard and fast rules but my 1976 model has the 1/16" limit stamped on it and it does indeed work for that. My other machine that I got used came with a chuck (origins and dates unknown) it also worked on 1/16" bits. I had to replace that chuck this late fall and the "used" one I got also has the 1/16" stamp on it and I was given to understand this was one was from pre shopsmith days ie pre 1973.

I can also add that the ones I have all used the same keys however the key that came with the middle one was just plain the wrong one and didn't fit the chuck at all, so I had to get one from Ace for that.

It would be interesting to know just how many different models of chuck have been used over the years.
