Hi Gents,

Thanks for the inputs. The loose collar near the drive sleeve, I did find and figure out. The other flimsy washer is shown in reible's photos but not seen in mickyd's photo. I believe it goes between the bearing and the 'shoulder' inside the quill where the bearing seats. That's what I just tried and it seems OK.

I deleted my post. I now see the flimsy one your talking about.

disassembly instructions

I have seen that the recommended bearing for a single bearing quill is a 202KDD5 (C1 rating) from http://www.ebatmus.com. That seems like a much better choice in terms of cost rather than buying the new quill. However, while the pictures in this thread are great, I haven't seen any great quill disassembly instructions. Is there a post already out there with good info? http://www.shopsmith.net/forums/showthr ... isassembly seemed like a good start, but didn't have the disassembly info I was hoping to find.

Maintenance Procedures

I recommend that any new or already Shopsmith owner who does not have these 25 maintenance procedures to copy them to their computer and to a back-up disk. You never know when this site may be deleted, have a virus or shut down. Referencing a step in a specific procedures where you are having a problem or not understanding the step helps us to respond to most Shopsmith maintenance problems. Thanks.

Thanks for the quick response Bill. I have looked through those, but I'm not sure they address what I am looking to do. I have the quill assembly removed from the headstock (that was pretty easy). What I was hoping to do is replace the bearing in the quill with a better one.

In looking at the pictures, the diagrams, and the associated part numbers it seems like it would simply be removal of the retaining ring (#64 in the headstock diagram, part number 518209) with a pair of c-ring pliers. At that point will everything just slip appart? Naturally the Spindle knob would need to be removed first. From there what would the steps be to replace the bearing on the spindle assembly? I saw the suggestion of the bearing puller tools from harbor freight, which would be easy enough to get.

It should then pull out the front(the ring retains the bearing and shaft). Slip - maybe! You may need to persuade it a little - push from the rear should do it.(keep it straight). When re-installing, do not put pressure on the balls(apply pressure to inner/outer race only as appropriate).
