Hi All,
This kind of turning chisel shows up every now and again for sale on different websites. I was a bit surprised to see SS trying to sell them.
This is is suppose to be one of those "miracle" chisels that crop up time to time, along with other "magic" woodturning tools that if you read about them you'd swear they will do all the turning for you.
Actually, this chisel comes and goes because it doesn't work as well as they claim. This system of trying to suck away the wood chips through the chisel has been tried over and over. Truth is, the round chisel is nothing more than a pipe with an edge grinded onto its end. It clogs up with chips constantly, which means you have to stop and clean it out all the time. It is very time consuming.
I have been woodturning since the 8th grade (35 years) and have seen things like this come and go in the woodturning world, usually go. I prefer the old fashioned method of letting the chips fall and using a broom, brush and dustpan to clean up. Anyone who purchases this chisel will find that the older method works best too, after trying out this "new" chisel a couple of times.
I'm sorry to bash anything SS is selling, but this is one tool anyone who is serious about woodturning should stay away from. You are much better off using the money to buy the bowl-turning or spindle chisel set.
Again, I'm very surprised to see SS selling a tool like this.
